As you stroll through the Redstone Center, be sure to pop into J.W. Allen & Sons for a glimpse into the splendid past of playthings and sweets. This shop offers more than old-fashioned candy and toys; it lulls visitors into a sensation of nostalgia with its small-town feel and authentic retro favorites.
Still a boy at heart, store owner/ operator Jon Allen adores his work. With an easy smile, he is fast to step out from behind the counter and offer customers hands-on toy demonstrations. “We stock our store with as many vintage toys as possible, like Evil Knievel stunt cycles, sock monkeys, army men, tin robots, Madame Alexander dolls and even some politically incorrect items like cap guns and bubble gum cigarettes,” explains Allen. “All of our merchandise gives the store the vibe I was looking for.”
Although the Allens have called Park City home for almost five years, they began their family in New York. Even though the drama and tragedy of 9/11 played a part in nudging the Allens towards Park City, it was actually a family vacation here that was the catalyst for a huge life change. While shopping one winter day, the family (Jon, wife Jackie and sons Liam, Kent and Pierce) realized Park City was lacking an authentic toy store. “That got the wheels spinning, and although totally new to the retail world, we thought this could be an opportunity and a nitch for us to fill,” explains Allen. “We haven't looked back.”
Since the entrepreneurial clan had no experience in the toy industry, they used their determination to create a thriving business that has added playfulness to their own lives and boosted the enjoyment of family time for many members of the Park City community at large.
The toy shop has become more than a business venture for the Allens; it is also a way to meet countless folks in the community, as everyone with children has managed to come through the store. Jon fondly remembers the family’s first days in Park City. “The second day after our move, we were invited to a local party and made great friends,” he says. “How special it is to be living and thriving in Park City.”
Being a tourist hot spot, Park City has visitors from around the world, and Jon loves the opportunities he has to meet them. “I’ve had comments from families all over the world about how much they love our store and how truly unique it is,” says Allen. “It’s been great to see the same people come back year after year.”
Just in time for the holidays, J.W. Allen & Sons will receive a massive influx of much-desired toys. There will be a huge selection of sleds, including Mad River Rocket Sleds from Vermont, Mountain Boy Toboggans made in Colorado, and sleds from Canada.
Whether in need of a toy, a candy, or just a friendly smile, head into J.W. Allen Toys for a sweet venture into a happy toyland.
