Part of what makes Park City so unique as a winter destination is the abundance of cultural offerings and the ability to attract world-class artists. From performing arts to visual arts and cinema, there is something for everyone to enjoy after a day on the slopes.
Each season the Park City Performing Arts Foundation offers an eclectic selection of entertainment, with performances in the Eccles Center at Park City High School. See page 47 in this section for a schedule of events or call 435.655.3114.
This winter the Egyptian Theatre Company will offer a program of musicals and plays to entertain winter visitors, including The Wizard of Oz (November 26-Dec. 31, 2004) and the acclaimed improv group The Second City (January 10 and 11, 2005). The intimate, 260-seat venue is located in the heart of town on historic Main Street.
If you don’t mind the short trip down Parley’s Canyon, Salt Lake City offers a number of dance, theatre and music alternatives. Among the more distinguished: Ballet West is a leader among professional ballet companies in the United States and presents performances in the elegant Capitol Theatre; The Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, performing in the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, is Salt Lake City’s premier modern-dance troupe; The Pioneer Theatre Company takes residence at the University of Utah and presents a mixture of classics, large-scale musicals, and contemporary dramas and comedies; The Grand Theatre at Salt Lake Community College utilizes local talent and highlights musical theatre; The Plan B Theatre Company performs in the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center and provides unique theatre experience, including radio plays, mask pieces, farce, puppet theatre, and socially conscious plays; The Utah Symphony & Opera, one of the largest performing arts organizations in the western United States, offers a schedule packed with diverse performances.
On weekends, the Park City Arts Council presents a locals’ favorite – the Park City Film Series. You can check out this great showcase of
alternative films in the Jim Santy auditorium at the Park City Library and Education Center.
And, if you’re in town January 20-30, 2005, don’t miss the world-famous Sundance Film Festival, where hundreds of groundbreaking, independent works by domestic and international filmmakers are screened throughout town in unique venues. This is also a fantastic opportunity to stumble upon some high-profile, accomplished musicians performing at the Festival’s Music Café.
