Indoor Activities

Looking for some amusement in the comfort of the warm indoors? If games that light up and go “ping” are your thing, check out the arcade center underneath the Town Lift on Lower Main Street.

You can have some uninhibited fun bowling at the lanes in Heber City, just a 20-minute drive from Park City. Be sure to go hungry; the cheeseburgers at the bowling alley are legendary.

Feeling lucky? Though gambling isn’t legal in Utah, you can take a specialized bus from Salt Lake City to Wendover, Nevada, just across the state line where numerous casinos await your arrival.

If you’re looking for something more on the calmer side, cultivate your bookish nature — or just relax with a magazine — at one of Park City’s libraries. The Park City Library and Education Center, 1255 Park Avenue, is open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. 435.615.5600. On the third Thursday of each month, from 3:30 p.m.-5 p.m., the Park City Library Book Club invites teens and adults to join the book discussion group. If you are near Kimball Junction and want a library, go to the Summit County Library, 6505 N. Landmark Drive (across from McDonald’s). It’s open Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. 435.615.3900.

Maybe you want to munch on some salty, hot popcorn and chill out in front of a massive screen with state-of-the-art sound. Park City now has a couple of high-quality movie houses — Holiday Village Cinemas right in town and Redstone 8, near Kimball Junction.

If you’d rather rent a DVD or video to watch in the comfort of your own space, most grocery stores have a video rental section, or you can check out the selection at Blockbuster.

There are a number of bars with billiards right in and around town if you’re looking to challenge your buddies, or some locals, to Cutthroat, 8-Ball, 9-Ball, Call-Shot — you name the game.

Swimming is an excellent stress-free exercise to help work out those post-mogul run kinks, and the breathing is almost meditative. Whether you want to just take a dip for fun or swim some laps, Park City has a couple of indoor swimming pool alternatives. The Park City Aquatic Center, at Ecker Hill Middle School, has a large indoor pool that’s open to the public during certain hours, and Silver Mountain Sports Club & Spa puts a dome over their main pool for the winter season. (Silver Mountain also has an outdoor heated lap pool, as does the Park City Racquet Club, whose heated lap pool closes in late fall and opens in early spring.)

You just can’t get enough of a workout on the slopes? Maybe you’re looking for a way to stretch out and tend to those sore, tired muscles. Whatever your goal, Park City’s athletic clubs offer you the best in fitness options. You’ll find exercise equipment, weights, basketball gyms, tennis and racquetball courts, saunas, Jacuzzis and steam rooms, and classes such as aerobics, spinning, and circuit training.

If you like to play field sports, check out the brand new facility at Kimball Junction, the Basin Recreation Field House, for some pick-up indoor soccer, weightlifting, or running on their track. Do you want to practice your golf swing even though there is a foot of fresh snow on the ground? No worries, the Field House also has golf — and batting — cages.

Many athletes and non-athletes alike are incorporating yoga into their fitness routine. So before you head out to tear it up on the slopes, or when you need to wind down, check out Park City’s yoga options at the Yoga Center or one of the athletic clubs.

Aikido, the “way of harmony,” is more than self-defense; it is an art to be enjoyed by all ages. Talk to the athletic club staff about the Aikido class schedule.

This fitness talk is all well and good you say, but what you really want right now is to be pampered. Fear not, in Park City there are more than a half dozen spas, each one waiting to give you an invigorating massage and/or specialized treatment. For more details, see the Spa Insert in this issue of Park City Magazine.
