High Steaks

How can anyone resist a perfectly cooked thick and juicy steak — particularly now that carbohydrates have been placed on the “Do Not Touch” list? Low-carb diets have given beef a boost in the culinary marketplace and all-time high prices for quality meat makes choosing a steak for the backyard grill or in a restaurant, well … a high stakes endeavor. A “Prime” steakhouse T-bone or Porterhouse can easily run over 30 bucks, while lesser quality “Choice” steaks from a local supermarket will still cost about half that. A single USDA Prime dry-aged ribeye steak from a reputable mail-order supplier like Allen Brothers can easily set you back $35, plus shipping.

Thankfully, Park City has more than its fair share of quality steakhouses — something for every palate and pocketbook. The Claimjumper is a classic turn-of-the century-style eatery with an old-timey Victorian vibe, while L’Esprit Cellars Prime Steak & Spirits offers an intimate, exclusive ambiance along with one of Park City’s best wine selections. True to its name, Prime Steak House serves only USDA Prime steaks (USDA Prime accounts for only the top two percent of USDA graded steaks in this country), in a roomy, attractive eatery on the Marriot Plaza. Across town in Prospector Square, the Grub Steak is a longtime favorite family steakhouse for locals and visitors alike. In The Caledonian, Butcher’s Chop House & Bar is a sizeable, well-appointed steakhouse with a large wine cellar, lovely décor, and excellent service. Butcher’s downstairs bar is a great place to meet. In fact, all of Park City’s steakhouses are perfect places to “meat.”
