Class Act
As a writer, I get to learn something new with every assignment. But sometimes I get burned out. So this past winter, I found a class in the University of Utah’s extensive Lifelong Learning catalog that had nothing to do with my regular beat. My attendance in psychic Margaret Ruth’s Reading the Tarot class must have been written in the cards.
A psychic and intuition expert, Ruth balanced informality and humor in teaching a group of nine students. She had every single one of us reading tarot by the end of the first three-hour class, and I was amazed at the insights: one person even divined that her friend was switching careers. I won’t be switching careers to fortune telling soon, but the class did spur me back to writing with a renewed energy and dedication.
The potential for inspiration from Lifelong Learning comes in many forms, from the usual arts, cooking and music to How to Raise Backyard Chickens, or Scotch for the Sophisticate. In between, you’ll discover rock climbing, children’s book illustration and a class on Utah’s ghost towns. Most classes are held at sites around Salt Lake City, but there are a few right here in Park City. The Park City School District (PCSD) also offers community education classes, with this year’s spring choices including Chakra Journey, Seafood School and Basic Conventions of Bridge, as well as courses in knitting, CPR, computer basics and more. PCSD also offers hundreds of courses online.
Take it from me: these classes can help refresh your outlook. My tarot class may not have taught me how to foretell the future, but I can say that it has enriched my present.
