The Urge to Merge:

Every year since 1974, a fierce but friendly rivalry occurred on the Fourth of July. It didn’t involve celebrating our independence, although there were plenty of fireworks. “It was a great rivalry,” says Park City Rugby Football Club’s Jack Walzer. That long-standing rivalry evolves as former arch nemeses the Park City Muckers and Salt Lake Haggis rugby clubs combine talents and resources to create a formidable Division 1 team. Walzer explains: “The player numbers up in Park City started to dwindle. “And they [the Haggis] weren’t getting a lot of support from the city.” The newly formed Park City Haggis will continue playing here in Park City and in Western leagues, looking for a rival to fill the Fourth of July void.
