Park City's New Alpine Coaster
When I was a child, I was terrified of roller coasters. Their rickety tracks seemed made of matchsticks, and I could never understand why people clamored to sit in the front seat for the achingly slow ascent before being hurtled toward the ground and certain death at the feet of “Carneys” and Coney Island fair-goers. My mom and brother loved it; Daddy and I opted for the Ferris wheel.
Now that I’m older and a little more daring, I feel the need for speed, and the Alpine Coaster at Park City Mountain Resort is the perfect mix of thrills and fun. I’m in control of the brakes, even if I don’t use them, and the 4,000 feet of elevated metal track bends, curves and loops through an aspen glade for a breathtaking ride in one or two-person toboggans. Alpine Coasters, already popular in Europe, are just now making it on the scene here in the U.S. Open summer and winter, Park City Mountain Resort’s new coaster promises to become a favorite for visitors.
