Making A Difference

In addition to nearly 100 local charitable organizations, Park City has chapters of some of the most venerable national and international service organizations. Members of these clubs bring a breadth and depth of community service to Park City that inspires and enriches its citizenry.
Park City Sunrise Rotary
Founded in 1999, the Sunrise Rotary now has nearly 50 members who spread the motto of “service above self” through a variety of projects and activities around Park City. They run the lunch concession on the Fourth of July in City Park, beer concessions at the Arts Festival, clean up the historic Glenwood Cemetery, support the international dinners at the Christian Center, support the Hope Alliance, and work with the Park City Rotary to provide dictionaries to all of Summit County’s third graders. www.parkcitysunriserotary.org, or call Bill Loughlin at 435.649.4005.
Park City Rotary
Jim Lea, the current president of the Park City Rotary, points out that this organization keeps vibrant by continuing to attract “the movers and shakers in the town who had and still have an interest in continuing to grow as a community.” Focusing on community service, these 85 members coordinate all the local Miners Day activities from the parade to the games in the park, sponsor the Learn to Ski and Board program for local middle school children, commemorate the Citizen of the Year, and grant an additional $15,000 or so a year to various other local charities. Park City Lions Club
For about ten years, the local chapter of the Lions Club has been promoting diabetes awareness, sight conservation, and providing hearing aids to those who otherwise would not be able to afford them. They maintain collection boxes for used eyeglasses at the post office. Each year, Lions member Dr. Robert Briggs takes these glasses to impoverished areas of Mexico. Members of the Lions Club also help out as volunteers at the annual Park City Marathon. Each spring, the Lions Club holds its annual fundraiser, the Flight for Life Kite Flying Contest at the Oakley Rodeo Grounds. This is a fun, family-oriented event with cash prizes for the winning flyers. Contact Florence Kruger at 435.649.8777.
Park City Kiwanis Club
The 12 busy members of the local Kiwanis Club further its goal of serving the children of the world one community and one child at a time by sponsoring and mentoring the children in the Key Club at Park City High, Builders Club at both middle schools, and K-Kids at Parley’s Park Elementary. About 300 local children participate in these service-oriented clubs, with projects that serve both the local community and other areas, such as Primary Children’s Hospital. The Kiwanis also run a reading program at each of Summit County’s elementary schools. Call Debbie Hoffmier at 435.647.3730.
