Making a Difference

The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy’s mission is to protect the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. Since 1983, The Nature Conservancy has protected nearly 900,000 acres of important habitat in Utah. In April 2006 The Nature Conservancy will launch Utah’s Living Lands and Waters Campaign, to preserve our state’s most at-risk landscapes, such as a key portion of the Virgin River watershed high above the Kolob section of Zion National Park. Private individuals, foundations, and federal and state grants fund the Nature Conservancy. For more information, contact Alice Storm 801.531.0900 or visit www.nature.org/utah.

Planned Parenthood

Since 1970, Planned Parenthood of Utah has worked to promote responsible sexual behavior and to reduce the physical, emotional, and social costs of unplanned and unwanted pregnancy. With seven clinics, including one in Park City, and 12 rural health providers, Planned Parenthood Association of Utah serviced 34,785 Utah residents in 2004. The organization provides information and education to people of all ages concerning human sexual behavior and reproduction; offers affordable, high-quality reproductive health care services; and protects and advocates for the rights of individuals to understand and manage their reproductive lives. Individual donations support the organization. Planned Parenthood can be reached in Park City at 435.649.5989 and more information is available at www.plannedparenthood.org.

Habitat For Humanity

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization that uses volunteers to build affordable houses in partnership with those who lack adequate shelter. Habitat for Humanity for Summit and Wasatch Counties (HFHSWC) has built seven homes since 1995. In 2006, HFHSWC will build homes for three more local families. In order to make these homes affordable, HFHSWC arranges for donated labor and materials and varies the term of the mortgage.

The local organization raises funds through donations and events like the Nail Driver Adventure Race (formerly the “HabiTri” triathlon). Volunteers are also needed. For more information, contact Kaity Quinley at 435.640.6462 or visit www.habitatutah.org.
