Performing Arts and Film

To steal a line from a famous chanteuse, the hills are alive with the sound of music —rock, classical, jazz and soundtracks. Park City in the summertime is a great way to experience all the performing arts within a beautiful mountain setting.

It’s hard not to feel like you have your own soundtrack while wandering around downtown in the evenings. Mountain Town Stages is one of the major organizations that fills every nook and cranny of Main Street with live music in the summer. From stages built especially for sit-down concerts to individual musicians set up in Miners Park, music follows you wherever you go.

The Canyons Resort will continue its Saturday night concert series, giving free concerts by well-know local and international bands at The Forum. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and a picnic for a laid-back, fun concert experience.

Ready to catch a film? Park City has two movie houses that show the latest blockbusters as well as some of the most popular independent films. Video and DVD rentals are available at local grocery stores, video rental businesses and at some larger lodging properties. The Park City Film Series remains dark for most of the summer, but will finish its spring lineup by mid-June and begin again in early September.

The Sundance Institute also gives the town a big ‘thank you’ every summer with the expanded Sundance Institute Film Festival in City Park. The Institute will project old and new favorites on a temporary screen to an audience curled up on beach blankets and lawn chairs on seven Friday nights during July and August, weather permitting. The Institute also hosts special free screenings at the Jim Santy Auditorium.

Laughter will brighten the stage of The Egyptian Theater when La Cage Aux Folles begins June 24, featuring a mix of local and national actors.
The Park City Performing Arts Foundation (PCPAF) has a summer full of performances scheduled, including the Big Stars, Bright Nights outdoor series, featuring such names as the Pointer Sisters and B.B. King this summer. The PCPAF’s Wednesday night Concerts in the Park will return to the Snow Park Amphitheater in Deer Valley this summer, giving as many people as possible a chance to soak in a mid-week musical experience. Deer Valley will also act as the venue for the Park City Jazz Festival in August, featuring Taj Mahal, George Benson, Bela Fleck and more. Deer Valley will also host the Deer Valley Music Festival and the performances of the Utah Symphony and Opera in July and August.
