UTAH’S POET LAUREATE SPEAKS AT KIMBALL ART CENTER’S APRIL ART TALK
Katharine Coles reads work from her most recent collection, Reckless, inspired by a trip to Antarctica
Park City, Utah – In celebration of April being Poetry Month, poet, novelist, and editor Katharine Coles is speaking and reading her poetry at the Kimball Art Center’s Art Talk on Thursday, April 19th at 6pm. Coles is the author of several collections of poetry including Fault (2008), Utah Book Award-winner The Golden Years of the Fourth Dimension (2001), and The One Right Touch (1992).
Coles recently spent a month in the Antarctic on a science base. The poems she will read from Reckless were inspired by the trip, made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artists and Writers Program in 2010
“People don't necessarily think of poetry as being about joy, especially these days. But traveling to Antarctica to write these poems was a blissful experience, and I think the poems really reflect the sense of adventure and happiness I got out of the journey,” said Coles. “The place itself is so beautiful and strange—not only the vast landscape but also the creatures that live in the air and water around it—and from the moment the ship sailed I had the feeling that I was literally traveling off the edge of the world. That is really the source of the poems and also the sense I am trying to communicate in them,” she added.
