501 On Main Has Arrived!
One thing this restaurant always had going for it? Location, location, location. Right across from the post office on Main Street, with fabulous outdoor dining, in the center of the hustle and bustle of popular bars like the No Name and Oh, shucks, 501 always had the potential to be a thriving restaurant, but it (self-admittedly) had trouble figuring out what it wanted to be when it grew up. Owned by locals Paul and Cathy Marsh since 1986, the restaurant has gone through several incarnations (it was once Zona Rosa), but has finally hit its stride as an affordable and delicious locals hangout that has found its calling.
Chef Bear Stromness, who most recently cooked at Salt Lake City’s swanky Metropolitan restaurant, has designed a new and exciting menu and given the whole place a jump start. The two-level restaurant has designated downstairs as a pub atmosphere where diners can enjoy bar bites, drinks and great on-the-street views of the action on Main Street. Watch the big game, enjoy one of their sulfite-free, organic and sustainable wines (they say they have the largest selection in Utah) or have a beer with appetizers like lobster and shrimp cakes, spicy hot shrimp tempura with aioli, or a BBQ chicken skewer. The Park City Cowboy burger comes topped with tater tots, brie and bacon, with housemade BBQ sauce on a toasted ciabatta bun. Yum! The Reuben was mouthwatering, and amply sized, and lest you worry for your waistline, six salad offerings will keep you in line. The Roasted Beet Salad with fresh spring mix, green apple, apricots, toasted and spiced pumpkin seeds, gorgonzola cheese and creamy lemon cayenne dressing is a unique combination that really sings.
Upstairs is now the more upscale dining room, though still completely casual as Park City knows how to do so well. This is where Stromness pulls in the influence of his Native American background and that of his Hawaiian wife’s, in dishes such as the Seafood Lau Lau with lobster, salmon, shrimp, zucchini, red onion, spinach, ginger rice and white miso butter, wrapped in a banana leaf and steamed. The Wagyu Beef Tender with pan-seared tenderloin, shitake mushrooms, caramelized onions, served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables is melt-in-your-mouth delicious. And my favorite was the risotto, served in its own hand-formed potato nest, topped with handmade balsamic pearls (you’ll have to go in to see what they are). 501 on Main has multiple gluten-free items on the menu and stay tuned for a vegan menu soon, to include items such as vegan pecan pie, fruit pizza and Boston cream pie! Stromness, the Marshes and management are very excited about their new beginning, which promises to be tasty and relaxed for Parkites. If you haven’t been in for a while, give it a try. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.
