A Walk In The Park

Ski Movie Life Movie

Ski Movie Life Movie

I love it when I can support and celebrate the endeavors of fellow creative types trying to make their way in the world. Last night was such a night. Former pro skier, author and filmmaker Bill Kerig unveiled his latest film, "The Edge of Never" to an intimate but lively group of friends, family and associates at the beautiful Post Theater in the lovely historic Fort Douglas neighborhood at the University of Utah. The gang from High West Distillery (due to be open in Park City in late September) showed to pour celebratory libations, and of course warm, buttery movie popcorn was served as well.

Bill started his film "The Edge of Never" five long years ago, encountering many bumps along the way - everything from crew members dying to weather holds for shooting, to trying to find funding and distribution for the project. In the middle of the process, Bill got it all down on paper by writing the book, which Park City Magazine will feature as our book review in the upcoming winter issue. Perhaps getting the book finished got all of the creative and universal forces rolling again and Bill was able to get the film rolling again as well. Last night's version is two weeks out from going public, and Bill asked his group of supporters for commentary and feedback so that they can make final tweaks on the film before it goes out into the big, wide world.

The end result is moving and exciting - a combination ski movie (great footage of big mountain skiing in Chamonix, rockin' music, cool clothes) and the tale of a life journey. Kye, the 15-year-old son of the late big mountain skier Trevor Petersen, decided he wanted to visit the Chamonix glacier where his father was killed by an avalanche in 1996. The story unfolds as Kye's mother and grandmother allow him to go with a group of skiing mentors (including Glen Plake), learn to ski the big mountains, and get to the point both physically and emotionally where he can spread his father's ashes on the glacier and ski down the terrifying couloir where his father died. Meanwhile, Bill's personal story unfolds as he learns to reconcile his own life as a former pro skier, his love and passion for skiing in the mountains, his calling as a writer and storyteller and his obligations and appreciation for his beautiful wife and two small children. Just like skiing itself, it's all about finding balance.

Congratulations to our friend Bill on his achievement! And to all of those involved in the film. And check out Park City Magazine's book review on "Edge of Never" in our upcoming winter issue.
