Afternoon Delight

Afternoon Delight

As one of the guests at yesterday afternoon's Park City Food and Wine Classic murmured, "I can't believe this is Utah." Indeed, there we were, outside at The Canyons Forum, surrounded by unusually-green-for-July-mountains and about 500 wines! Guests strolled from booth to booth, sipping the likes of King Estate Pinot Gris, Frog's Leap Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, Trefethen Merlot (the lines for these wines got a bit elbowy with gleeful anticipation), or perhaps seeking treasure in those a little less well known - one felt so adventurous, after all - let's try the TWODOG Sauvignon Blanc and Viogner mix, or the smoky Fontanafredda Briccotondo Barbera (the wine flowed over the tongue as beautifully as its name).

And as if the wine pouring wasn't enough to make one feel giddy, the spirits were flowing as well, with whiskey sours from our own High West Distillery (soon to be open in Park City), Bacardi, Remy Cointreau and more. Edibles like mole meatballs from Rico, buffalo from Stein Eriksen Lodge, sausage and cheese biscuits from Tillamook cheese, roasted pork loin and sweet potato from The Canyons restaurant The Cabin (yum!), jellybeans from Park City's new candy store, SugarBuzz, and my favorite of the day, grilled salmon with a yellow curry sauce from Bangkok Thai, kept tummies just full enough to keep enjoying the vino without falling over. (There was much talk in the crowd about plans for post-event napping, however). An often slightly overcast sky kept the temperatures perfectly comfortable for sipping and socializing, the breeze fluttering the skirts and straw hat brims of women in their pretty summer attire. What a delightful way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Park City.

This Grand Tasting was actually the final event of the Park City Food & Wine Classic, now celebrating its 5th year … the weekend included many food and wine seminars, a golf tournament, another grand tasting on our historic Main Street Friday night and more. A portion of the proceeds from the event benefit the Alzheimer's Association Utah Chapter. Check it out next year - parkcityfoodandwineclassic.com.
