Bloodies and Bluegrass - The Sundance Music Café

Bloodies and Bluegrass - The Sundance Music Café

Stopped into the Sundance Music Café (751 Main Street, the Stanfield Gallery) the other day for a delightful afternoon. It wasn’t too crowded, folks were attentive to the music though not anal about it (there was some respectfully quiet chit chat going on) and love the Andy Warholesque portraits of Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison in sparkly pink paint on the wall. Because I am old, I didn’t recognize a single name on the ASCAP performers list this year (except Josh Ritter), but as always, it’s great to be introduced to some new, kind-of-behind-the-scenes voices. Take Bobby Long, for instance, who has written songs for TV and film, like the theme song “Let Me Sign” from the film Twilight (which I haven’t seen because I am old). He had a lovely...

Inspiration At Sundance

Inspiration At Sundance

I’ve said it before – you can be a little skeptical about the Sundance Film Festival when you live here, because there are traffic impacts and grocery store impacts and some really interesting fashion statements walking around town, but if you go watch the FILMS, you’ll get swept into the energy that started this festival in the first place before it had fur coats and sequins all over it, and it’s all worthwhile.

The majority of films I’ve seen so far have been documentaries, and all have something in common: each features a person, or people, who have a deep passion for something, and bravely committed themselves to that passion, not having any idea what the outcome would be.

The documentary BUCK is a must-see. My very favorite so far....

Why To Love The New Deer Valley Grocery-Cafe.

01/22/11

Why To Love The New Deer Valley Grocery-Cafe.

1. Because that wonderful space and deck on Deer Valley Drive where the Stew Pot was for years is just too cool a place to not have filled with something wonderful: a breakfast and lunch café as well as a gourmet grocery with liquor and specialty snacks. And loads of easy parking in a spacious lot.

2. Because when you’re on your way home from skiing Deer Valley and you have no idea what you’re making for dinner, you can stop in and grab Deer Valley restaurant favorites ready to take from the cooler. Think a gourmet pizza (smoked salmon, grilled leek and asparagus, anyone?), the butternut squash shiitake mushroom and Anasazi bean enchiladas, Royal Street Café meatballs or housemade brats. Don’t forget DV’s homemade fig mustard...

Best New Addition to Sundance! The Chow Truck

Best New Addition to Sundance! The Chow Truck

Okay, people. Sundance is in town, there’s lots of glitz, glamour, gritty film (and some traffic), but honestly, when it comes right down to it, isn’t it really all about the FOOD? You don’t want your tummy grumbling in the middle of the quiet scene in your favorite movie. The GREATEST addition to the Sundance scene this year is the appearance of The Chow Truck, open to everyone daily during the festival at Miner’s Hospital parking lot from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. SuAn Chow’s food truck has been a huge hit in Salt Lake City, with her “haute Asian cuisine,” but because Park City’s zoning laws won’t allow food trucks, we’ve never had the privilege of enjoying SuAn’s fine edibles. Carpe Diem! She is here just for the ten...

Sundance: The Possibilities

Sundance: The Possibilities

It happens EVERY year. Every single year, I swear. The Sundance Film Festival is coming, so it snows. We haven’t had a good snowfall in weeks, and yesterday morning, the day before Sundance begins, we awoke to a foot of fresh powder. It isn’t so great for the throngs of filmmakers and goers who will descend upon our town en masse today (maybe in not-the-most-sensible shoes), walking on snowy sidewalks from theaters to the music café to lectures and restaurants, but it’s great for skiers (since the town’s hotels and condos are filled with Sundance attendees, you’ll have the slopes practically to yourself), and it’s great for the TV cameras that will be panning Park City for the next ten days, broadcasting images of our...
