A Walk In The Park

New Jupiter Bowl Right Up Park City’s Alley

New Jupiter Bowl Right Up Park City’s Alley

The holiday season gifted Park City with many presents. One of the shiniest? Our new bowling alley, Jupiter Bowl (a clever pun on our black diamond favorite at Park City Mountain Resort). We've been receiving press releases at the Park City Magazine office for several years now advertising the coming of the bowling alley, so it's quite satisfying and exciting to have it open! Lauded in pre-publicity as a complete "entertainment attraction," the place is truly living up to its aspirations, getting thumbs up from Park City kids and adults alike.

The 22,000-square-foot building houses 12 bowling lanes, glitzy and new, with a rainbow of colored bowling balls and sultry runway lighting. There's an uber- high-tech, 50-foot video screen that spans the wall over all 12 lanes, which is used to display one huge video or broken into smaller sections … so guests can watch, say, Monday Night Football, ski footage or music videos all at the same time while they're waiting for their turn to make a strike. A special private lounge ("Club Jupiter"), which people are reserving for unique birthday parties, office parties, reunions and more, offers four private lanes, couches, tables, chairs and catering. My kids dig the Wii lounge, featuring two Wii consoles with huge screens and couches, and the always-boy-enticing arcade lounge. Three sleek billiard tables are available for adults to get playful as well.

My favorite part is the floating bar looking out over the bowling lanes. Parents can be sipping delicious libations while mere feet away the kids are happily bowling. It's a great perch from which to keep an eye on everyone and enjoy a little relaxing adult time as well.

And don't worry about corndogs and potato chips being the only bowling food available. The Lift Grill and Lounge is sleek and inviting in a James Bondish sort of way, and offers over 40 menu items described as "American Classics to Continental Cuisine." Hey - they serve jambalaya over tomato scallion rice … when have you seen THAT at a bowling alley? The brick-oven baked hand-tossed pizzas have become the signature item.

It's no wonder Jupiter Bowl has a glitzy, glamorous feel to it - its owners, Barry and Amy Baker, Michael Malone and Tony Thomas, all have years of experience in the entertainment/film/television/news industries. Tony, in fact, is the son of the late Danny Thomas and sister to Marlo Thomas. It was perhaps even more touching then, to enjoy a very down-to-earth and heartfelt moment at Jupiter Bowl's grand opening. Barry Baker, whose father was apparently an avid bowler in his day flew his Dad out for the opening and surprised him by also flying out his custom bowling ball. Mr. Baker Sr. was honored by being asked to roll the first official ball down the lanes to kick off the opening. It was a sweet surprise for all. The Bakers, Mr. Thomas and Mr. Malone have truly given Park City another very fun pastime, and Parkites are enjoying it. From what I've heard, business was absolutely hopping over the holiday school break. Take advantage of the online reservation system!

Check it out for yourself. Rates are currently $4 for shoe rental, a game of bowling is about $7 and children up to 12 are only $3.50/game before 5 p.m.

Thanks for the coverage, Kristen! One correction - we have a total of 16 lanes, 4 of which are sectioned off for "Club Jupiter" lanes but are part of our open lanes if not rented for a private party. Thanks to everyone in the community for helping us get off the ground!
